Creating Focal Points

When decorating a space, each room/space should have a stamp of style – my rule of thumb is to have one main focal point per room and per bathroom where you “splash out” When making the rooms over, first create mood boards for each room so that you remain on brief and so that you have a visual reference for what you are setting out to achieve per room. It will be worth the effort and time. For your focal point, be bold and make a statement, that may be a big chandelier, or a four poster bed, -or even an Indian Gudri (hand stitched silk quilt), but it has to be an item that attracts your eye – and defines the room to give it personality .

From there, expand on ideas, using your colour theme with subtle variations.

Do not be shy to use texture, such as raw brick walls, or polished cement floors or accent wallpaper. South Africa is pregnant with creativity and style, our spaces should reflect that.
Decide what you can rework – example: re-upholster headboards, use paint effects on pieces you can retain (such as bedside tables) and upgrade other items with small touches – like introducing sheets of toughened glass on dressers and side tables – will smarten and create longevity for high usage – not to mention save on budget, so you can use that for your focal point items.

The same rule applies to bathrooms, white is really quite boring. Buy a chest of drawers, replace the top with limestone or granite, and get an basin sunk into the top of that. Get mirrors with cast frames, that you can paint or guild. Use a Chinese Laquer chest in bright blue or red for towels . Don’t be shy to have personality and bathrooms, and often this space is a real sanctuary for guests and what will set you aside from the “hotel” look.
Refrain from having everything as shiny, new and bold in the room, this look will date, and by mixing old with new, you cleverly allow yourself wriggle room to age gracefully.
